Milan, Liverpool and Athens: sweet memories…

Greece traditionally favours Milan who have won two finals there. In the 1972/73 season, the Rossoneri won the Cup Winners' Cup in a 1-0 win over Leeds United in Salonicco. In 1994, they defeated Barcelona 4-0 in the Champions Cup at the OAKA Spyros Louis stadium.
Liverpool also have a good record in the Greek captial. In the 1984/85 Champions Cup, the Reds overcame home side Panathinaikos to reach the final while in 2000/01 they drew 2-2 with Olympiacos to come through the UEFA Cup third round in the year they went on to win the competition.

Milan and English sides

Milan have played 24 official games against English teams: nine wins, seven draws and eight defeats including in penalties.

Liverpool and Italian sides

Liverpool have played 16 times against Italian teams, collecting seven wins including penalty shoot-outs in 1984 and 2005, two draws and seven defeats. The Reds have played three UEFA Cup finals against Italian sides and have won two.

Athens Olympic stadium

The new Olympic Stadium was noticeable for the twin 304m arches supporting the polycarbonate roof designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and designed to withstand winds of up to 120km/h. Reopened on 30 July 2004 and venue for the Olympic Games from 13-29 August, staging Opening Closing Ceremonies, athletics and the men's football final. After the Games, AEK and Panathinaikos both moved back into the stadium, allowing it to stage UEFA Champions League football, and it was awarded the 2007 final of that competition.
