MILAN - The history of Lazio-Milan shows that it is never a banal or predictable match. The two teams have met 66 times at the Stadio Olimpico. The balance is substantially even, with Milan getting three more victories, 19, against the 15 wins for the home side. The most frequent result has been the draw, however: the match finished square 32 times.
The last meeting, which coincides with the Rossoneri's last victory, came last season. It was 1 February 2009 when the Rossoneri left the Olimpico after beating Lazio 3-0. Alexandre Pato opened the score in the 42nd minute, then in the 48th minute Massimo Ambrosini doubled the score, then Kaká finished the scoring in the 83rd minute.
Also the preceding encounter was won by Milan. It was 7 October 2007, and Milan won 5-1 at the Olimpico against the Biancocelesti in the evening match of the 7th matchday of Serie A. The Rossoneri opened the score in the 16th minute with a goal by Ambrosini, Lazio drew in the 23rd minute through Mauri, but then Kaká and Gilardino both scored braces. First Ricky scored a penalty in the 32nd minute following a foul by Muslera on Gilardino, and then Kaká scored again in the 52nd minute. Then it was the moment of Gilardino who finished off the scoring with goals in the 70th and 79th minutes.
Lazio's last victory was 11 years ago, 1997-1998 season: goals by Mancini and Boksic vanified the goal scored by Kluivert.
Also in the 2004/2005 season, the victory went to the Rossoneri on the 4th matchday. On 26 September 2004 at the Olimpico, Milan went down to ten men following Ambrosini's sending off, but managed to turn a 1-0 disadvantage into a victory thanks to Andriy Shevchenko's brace.
Another historic result is tied to Sheva, the Biancocelesti's bogey man: the 4-4 of 3 October 1999, the match with the most goals. On that occasion the Ukrainian striker scored three goals, dazzling his new fans in an exciting match from start to finish.
The year of the Rossoneri's penultimate Scudetto, that of 1998-1999, instead, Milan did not go past the 0-0, but at the end of the season it was Lazio who had to make do with second place. In the 2003/2004 season, when Milan won their last Scudetto, Massimo Ambrosini scored a vital goal with a header, earning a victory that everyone considered fundamental to capture the title of Italian champions.
In the 2006/2007 season, just like the year before, it was another 0-0 draw. The match was played on 21 January, on a Sunday evening. Ahead of the match Lazio coach Delio Rossi did not call up Massimo Oddo, who would soon become a Rossonero.
