GIORGIO ‘KAMIKAZE’ GHEZZI BORN ON THIS DAY

MILAN – Giorgio Ghezzi, who sadly passed away in 1990, was born on this day in 1930. He wrote his name in the Milan history books by starring in between the sticks during the 1963 European Cup final at Wembley, in which the rossoneri became the first Italian side to ever lift the prestigious trophy to the heavens. Nicknamed ‘Kamikaze’ for his all-action displays in goal, he made 144 appearances for Milan from 1959-1965 winning not only the European Cup but also the Scudetto. The club pays tribute to him on this day!

FRANCO BARESI ON VAN BASTEN, NEW STADIUM AND UPCOMING SEASON

MILAN – Club legend Franco Baresi has given an exclusive interview to the Milan Channel. The Italian spoke about a range of themes, starting with the appointment of former team-mate and fellow club legend Marco van Basten as assistant coach to the Dutch national team:

"I am very happy for Marco because after the problems that we heard about, he needed to stay calm and I think it is good for him to be out on the training pitch. I am happy and I hope he can also have success as a coach."

On the stadium: "You have to look forwards, the biggest clubs own their stadium. There will be a bit of sadness when we have to leave the San Siro because it is the historic stadium where we have played for many years. Milan’s and Inter’s history is there, but we have to look to the future and compete with the big clubs. The new stadium will be wonderful and welcoming. The team is fundamental and I believe that the new stadium will help a great deal and I think that it’s right that Milan have the chance to own their stadium. The support will be even greater from the fans and the team will feel even more attached to the stadium."

Closing comments: "Milan is Milan, and even though tough seasons can happen, we cannot forget who we are and I think that we will be competitive again. There is the desire to be a leading side once again. We’re all confident."
