Yesterday at the Palazzo della Regione a ceremony was held for the 50th anniversary of the first European Cup won by Milan on May 22nd 1963 against Benfica.
Milan were the first Italian club to lift the European Cup when they defeated Benfica 2-1 at the famous Wembley stadium on May 22nd 1963 thanks to both goals from Josè Altafini.
Fifty years later the Lombardy Region recalled that great day with a special gala event. It was an evening rich with memories and stories retold by key members of the era. The ex players then stepped on to the stage to receive medals handed to them by president Roberto Maroni.
Regional president Roberto Maroni presented the protagonists from London with a commemorative medal. Amongst the legends from that day were captain Cesare Maldini, Gianni Rivera, José Altafini, Giovanni Lodetti and Gino Pivatelli.
Also present were Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani, sporting director, Ariedo Braida, coach Massimiliano Allegri, Franco Baresi and current vice-president of the Italian Football Federation, Demetrio Albertini.
