Both Nigel De Jong – powerful performance against PSV midweek - and Urby Emanuelson are ex Ajax players, one of the three teams that Milan has been drawn against in the Champions League.
MILAN – There are no less than 16 European Cup/Champions League titles between the four teams in Milan’s group H with three of the teams having won the title more than once.
Just like for Mark Van Bommel when PSV were drawn against the Rossoneri, there would have been a few shivers up the spines of both De Jong and Emanuelson when Ajax were drawn against Milan.
Nigel De Jong played for the Dutch side from 2002-2006 playing 96 games and scoring 8 goals. He made his debut with the first team against AZ Alkmaar in a game won 6-2. After leaving his first club, De Jong went on to play for Hamburg, Manchester City and now Milan.
Urby Emanuelson is another product of the Ajax youth academy and played 172 games with 17 goals for the first team. He made his debut on 24 February 2005 in the UEFA Cup against Auxerre, coming on for Sneijder in a match lost 3-1. He won the Dutch Super Cup in 2005 and the Dutch cup the same season. He played at left back under Marco Van Basten in 2008/2009 but was subsequently pushed up the field. He even played against Milan in the Champions League in the 2010/2011 season. The game ended 1-1 in Amsterdam and 0-2 at the San Siro with Milan already through to the next round of Europe’s top competition.
Urby and Nigel both came through the youth ranks at Ajax and this season, with Milan in the competition, the UEFA Youth League kicks off for players under the age of 19. Click here for more details.
