GIAMPAOLO: "WE MUST IMPROVE ON OUR ATTACKING PLAY"

Speaking to Milan TV after Sunday's defeat, the Rossoneri tactician highlighted a number of key issues for the team to improve on

Following Sunday’s defeat in Udine, Coach Giampaolo spoke to Milan TV about the team’s performance, as did Captain Romagnoli and Fabio Borini.

GIAMPAOLO ON THE MATCH

“The match speaks for itself and it’s not good when AC Milan lose. I picked up on many things today beyond that of just the result. The team tried to do what I asked of them, looking to impose themselves and take the game to the opposition. We must work on our offensive play because we struggled in that department. It’s not just the lads’ responsibility but more a matter of specific characteristics. I must go beyond the result in understanding how we can be at our best. Maybe I asked them certain things but they have different characteristics. Up until now, the lads have shown me great willingness. I must now find the best solution according to the characteristics of certain matches.”

ON REFEREEING DECISIONS

“We’re annoyed by the result, but my evaluations wouldn't be different if we’d have equalised from the penalty spot. I must make some serious analysis, looking to understand where the team must improve and what works well. I must be objective. It may be that they award the penalty for an equaliser but this wouldn’t lead me to any different evaluations. When you lose, it’s only right for there to be controversial issues, but we must focus on ourselves - looking to play better football than we did today and without losing sight of being protagonists. We’ll only achieve this through hard work.”

COMMENTS FROM ALESSIO ROMAGNOLI

“Incidents like that of the penalty can change the match and they make the difference. VAR should’ve seen that it was a clear hand-ball. It was a penalty and I don’t know how the referee could see that differently. Our project needs time. We have time to work during the week and the Coach is very prepared. The ideas will come. I’m extremely proud to make my 150th start for the Rossoneri. It’s a historic club and it’s a source of great pride to be involved and to be captain.”

COMMENTS FROM FABIO BORINI

“Our process requires trust. We’ve changed many things in the way we play and the way we view the match. Udinese were well-prepared, waiting for us and then using the counter-attack. In these type of cases, we struggle in the development of our play. It’s something for us to improve on. It’s the first match and we’re disappointed with the result but there is still a long way to go in the league. Hand or no hand, VAR or no VAR, we must be in the match. The difference is made by not conceding and staying focused. It’s the first match but it’s no excuse. We must have faith in the process and what the club is planning. The Coach’s ideas are suited to Milan and they’re decisive to our play.”
