Double Derby delight for AC Milan

Not long had passed since the end of Inter 1-2 AC Milan in the men’s Serie A before the Derby in the women’s Serie A kicked off. At the end of the cross-city clash at San Siro, Maurizio Ganz was already feeling the pressure: he knew that there were expectations on his shoulders and that he needed to complete a perfect Derby weekend.

With his players making an essential contribution, the Rossonere Coach did exactly that. With the 2-1 win at San Siro and the 4-1 triumph at Vismara, the city’s sky turned a Rossoneri shade of colour. A double Derby win, a perfect weekend, a clean sweep: these are just some newspaper titles that refer to a feat that has also happened before.

What happened between the evening of 17 October and the mid-afternoon of 18 October 2020 could be described as déjà vu. On 2 April 2011, AC Milan won two Derbies in one go. On the same day. In the early afternoon, the Primavera youth Derby took place, with AC Milan winning 1-0 at Interello thanks to a decisive goal by Simone Verdi, who struck a beautiful shot into the top corner.

With the youth Derby over, everyone then turned their attentions to the Scudetto Derby, which was set to be a huge clash between Allegri and Leonardo. After Verdi’s winner in the youth Derby, the Rossoneri’s clean sweep was completed by Alexandre Pato (a brace) and Antonio Cassano, who sealed a memorable 3-0 Derby day victory at San Siro, painting the city of Milan red and black that Saturday.
