MALDINI: "WE'RE ANNOYED"

Quotes from AC Milan's Technical Director following Fiorentina 1-1 AC Milan

This is what AC Milan's Technical Director Paolo Maldini had to say when speaking to DAZN following Fiorentina 1-1 AC Milan.

THE MATCH
"We played better than Fiorentina and deservedly went in front, but we weren't able to manage the game in the right way. We're a young team and struggle to keep it going for 90 minutes, especially when we're put under pressure. Today, we've got to shoulder a lot of the responsibility, we were in control but the team managed the one-man advantage poorly. AC Milan need to be brave and always take to the pitch to win. We decided to make the painful decision to change coach, but the foundations for the future can be seen."

THE PENALTY
"We're a bit annoyed with the penalty we conceded. In previous games we've tried hard to understand refereeing decisions, but VAR not calling the referee for that penalty incident was confusing. If this is a penalty, then I really don't know what's going on. They told us the touch on the ball has to be decisive, the referee only needed to spend 30 seconds watching the incident back. From that point onwards, the match changed. They looked at Ibra's goal again and ruled it out. Then they watched Dalbert's foul back and sent him off. I don't understand why they didn't look at what had happened for a third time. I've never seen a penalty like this given, it's clear that it wasn't a foul. It's impossible for the referee to tell the extent of the touch. VAR needs to be simplified or explained more clearly, the fact it wasn't used for the penalty is damaging to everyone. It needs to be used in a different way."

GABBIA
"He's made some incredible improvements, he came back from Lucchese and was able to raise his level. He earned the trust of Giampaolo and then Pioli. Instead of looking for reinforcements following Duarte's injury, we decided to put our faith in him."
