From Cagliari to… Cagliari. AC Milan's first home fixture of the 2021/22 season will be against the same side they faced in their last match at San Siro in 2020/21. The upcoming clash against the Sardinians comes after the Diavolo's victory in their opener away to Sampdoria, while it will also see Rossoneri fans return to the stands. AC Milan v Cagliari, the Diavolo's second fixture of the 2021/22 Serie TIM season, will kick off at 20:45 CEST on Sunday. As the game draws nearer, here are a few fun facts and stats for you to read:
PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS
1- AC Milan are the team that Cagliari have suffered the most defeats against in Serie A: the Rossoneri have emerged victories 43 times against the Sardinians, with 27 draws and eight defeats completing the picture. Tomorrow's showdown will be the 40th time that the sides have met at the home of the Rossoneri (W26, D10, L3).
2- AC Milan haven't conceded a single goal in their last five Serie A games against Cagliari. The last team the Rossoneri recorded more consecutive clean sheets against in the Italian top flight was Chievo in 2016 (seven).
GENERAL STATISTICS
3- AC Milan's last Serie A match at San Siro was against Cagliari in May. The Rossoneri are set to play the same side for two consecutive home matches for just the second time in the Italian top flight (after doing so against Bologna in 2003).
STATE OF PLAY
4- AC Milan could win their first two league games of the season in two consecutive Serie A campaigns for the first time since they did so under Carlo Ancelotti in 2002/03 and 2003/04.
5- AC Milan haven't conceded a goal in their last six league games. Only three times in their history have the Rossoneri registered at least seven Serie A clean sheets in a row: in February 1994 (nine), October 1993 and in January 1972 (seven on both occasions). Should they not allow Cagliari to score, the Diavolo would begin a top-flight campaign with two shutouts for the third time in the 21st century (after 2002/03 and 2020/21).
PLAYER FOCUS
6- Among the players who have scored at least five Serie A goals since the start of last season, AC Milan’s Brahim Díaz is the only one not to have found the net on home turf. Against Sampdoria, the Spaniard covered 284 metres with the ball at his feet, more than any other player on matchday one.
7- Two Rossoneri players made their Serie A debuts against Cagliari: Ismaël Bennacer (Empoli v Cagliari, August 2018) and Sandro Tonali (Cagliari v Brescia, August 2019).
8- During the showdown against Sampdoria on Monday, Rade Krunić was the AC Milan player who had the most touches (70) and made the most passes (52).
9- Cagliari are one of the three sides that Alessandro Florenzi has provided the most assists against in Serie A: he's set up a teammate to score against the Sardinians on three occasions and has also bagged once against them (for Roma in September 2014).
COACH FOCUS
10- Stefano Pioli (59%) is the AC Milan coach with the second-highest win percentage in Serie A (41 victories in 70 matches): only Lajos Czeizler (64%: 73/114) has done better in this regard. Cagliari are the team that the current Rossoneri boss has recorded the most wins against in the Italian top flight: ten in 19 matches (D5, L4).
