STAPELFELDT HEADS THE ROSSONERE TO VICTORY IN FLORENCE: 1-0

Nina with the winner for AC Milan, who are now two points off second

It was a huge win. AC Milan take oil the spoils in the big match on Women's Serie A matchday 7. They beat Fiorentina 1-0 in Florence thanks to a 20th-minute header from Nina Stapelfeldt - her first goal in the league. The Rossonere came through this test thanks to a solid team performance, especially in defence, and hardly gave any chances to a competitive Fiorentina team.

It was the perfect way to come back from the international break given the suboptimal conditions with a few absences but Ganz's warriors were brilliant, underlining once again the strength of this group. The Rossonere took three huge points and are now on 16 in the table - just two behind second-place Sassuolo after their defeat. A positive afternoon all around. Next up: it's Empoli at home at 14:30 CEST on Sunday 7 November.

REPORT

The Rossonere were without Vero and Thrige, while Giacinti started on the bench. Starts were given to Longo, Stapelfeldt and Tucceri Cimini. Captain Bergamaschi's misjudged backpass handed a chance to Sabatino in the fourth minute; her effort flashed wide. Thomas had a clear chance in the 13th minute as she look to place her effort into the corner only for Schroffenegger to make the save. AC Milan got their goal in the 20th minute; Tucceri Cimini swung in the corner and Stapelfeldt headed it home. The game was open and hard-fought even if light on chance until the 39th minute when the Rossonere had a double chance to increase their lead: Agard saw her free kick pushed behind by the goalkeeper; from the resulting corner, Adami flicked it on only for the defence to scramble it clear off the line. Half time.

There were no changes at the break and the Diavolo were increasingly looking to double their advantage. In the 49th minute, Stapelfeldt had a go but it was blocked. Giacinti almost scored what would have been a brilliant goal but her overhead kick was off target (65'). Fiorentina struggled to get out of their own half but, in the 70th minute, Mascarello forced Giuliani into making the save. Seconds later, Giacinti almost got in for a certain goal but Schroffenegger managed to get a foot in to deny Bergamaschi. Mascarello didn't give up but the clearest chance for the remainder of the game fell to Stapelfeldt, who fired wide (74'). Full time.
