The Rossonere test themselves in the second derby of the season on Saturday 28 January at PUMA House of Football, kick-off at 14:30 CET, in what is currently a positive period for the home side. There's a strong desire to do well, in what has so far been a favourable part of the season, bringing about positive performances and results. The game will see two sides, very close to each other in the table, go head-to-head. Let's look ahead to the game with our Preview.
LATEST FROM PUMA HOUSE OF FOOTBALL
Ganz's side are undoubtedly in a rich vein of form and are now ready to come up against teams of higher quality: the first is Rita Guarino's Inter. There are many reasons to do well in this game, as only four games remain in the regular season: get revenge for the 4-0 loss in the reverse fixture; move above the Nerazzurre in the league table, and keep a positive run of results going. Including the league and Coppa Italia, the Rossonere are now on a five-game winning streak, all without conceding a goal. In Wednesday's game against Fiorentina, new signing Aniek Nouwen made her debut, and she will also be up for selection for the derby. Instead, Dompig, Rubio and Jonušaitė are not available, as they continue to recover from their respective injuries.
Here's the Rossonere squad for the match: Babb, Fedele, Giuliani; Árnadóttir, Fusetti, Guagni, Mesjasz, Nouwen, Soffia, Thrige; Adami, Cesarini, K. Dubcová, Grimshaw, Mascarello, Vigilucci; Asllani, Bergamaschi, M. Dubcová, Piemonte, Thomas.
Here are Maurizio Ganz's words ahead of the match: "The derby is always a special match, it must be wholly enjoyed, we know it will be difficult for us but also for them. We hope to see good football and that it will be a match worthy of a derby".
LATEST FROM INTER
The Nerazzurre are just one point ahead of AC Milan in the table, and in their last league game drew 1-1 at home to Como Women. Instead, they beat Sampdoria 3-2 midweek in a Coppa Italia quarter-final tie. Coach Rita Guarino will have to do without Gloria Marinelli, who underwent knee surgery recently, and Anja Sønstevold, who also has a knee injury. Although, Inter's most recent signing, Frederikke Thøgersen from Rosengård, came on to make her debut against Como Women and got a first starting run-out against Sampdoria. The side's strongest area of the pitch is certainly the attacking department, who with Ajara Njoya, Chawinga, Bonetti and Polli are capable of hurting any team in the division.
On the eve of the match, Ajara Njoya spoke to Inter TV's microphones: "The match against AC Milan will be very difficult, we know they are a good team, we respect every opponent but we always work to improve because we are aware of our strength and we try to do our work to the highest level".
PRE-MATCH
27 goals have been scored in seven Serie A meetings between AC Milan and Inter, an average of 3.8 per game: 16 of these (59%) by the Rossonere. Along with Fiorentina, AC Milan are one of two sides to have scored the most number of goals in the opening 15 minutes of play in this year's league campaign so far (six apiece). Inter though, along with Juventus, are one of only two sides to have conceded the least number of goals in this period of the game (once, on 11 September against the Bianconeri). AC Milan have won their last three league games without letting a goal in and would have four straight clean sheets in the competition for the first time since the period between November 2020 and January 2021 if they were to keep out Inter (four clean sheets and four wins on that occasion).
