GOALLESS DRAW BETWEEN PARMA AND AC MILAN

Little excitement and no goals on the Rossonere's return to action

After almost a month-long Christmas break, AC Milan Women returned to action with a 0-0 draw away to Parma on matchday 10 of the Serie A Women season. It was a fair result based on what unfolded over 90 minutes in Emilia, in a match short on excitement and with few clear-cut chances at either end. The hosts were the more proactive side in the first half, while AC Milan grew into the game after the break and posed more of a threat going forward, particularly in the closing stages, though not enough to change the outcome.

There were certainly positives to take from Bakker's side, starting with a solid defensive display that saw AC Milan concede very little in their own half. The impact of the substitutes was also encouraging, especially the returning Monica Renzotti - making her first appearance after a two-month absence - and the lively Sara Stokić. These are signs to build on as attention now turns to a busy end to the month, starting on Tuesday 20 January, when AC Milan face Fiorentina in Solbiate Arno (kick-off at 18:00 CET) in the first leg of the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

MATCH REPORT
There was an early scare, with Soffia clearing off the line to deny Real in the third minute minute. It proved to be the best chance of an otherwise uneventful first half, as the two sides traded possession without ever really threatening. The Rossonere registered a couple of speculative efforts from Kyvåg and Soffia, but they were almost caught out at the end of the half, when Giuliani was forced to rush off her line to snuff out a dangerous Parma counter-attack.

The second half followed the same pattern as the opening 45 minutes, with few and largely ineffective attacking forays from either side, both of whom remained well organised tactically. Parma threatened in the 47th minute, with Uffren firing just wide with her left foot, before Benedetti tested Giuliani with a venomous strike a minute later. AC Milan improved as the game wore on, helped by their substitutes. Renzotti led a fine counter-attack in the 79th minute, but her through ball for Van Dooren was cut out. A lively finale saw Stokić and Soffia create two good opportunities (85' and 87'), but the scoreline remained unchanged even after six minutes of stoppage time.
