Giovanni Moretti grew up playing for the youth sides of his local team Crema, the city of his birth, before moving to AC Milan. A talented midfielder, he wore the Rossoneri shirt between the two wars, spending eight seasons at the Club in a period devoid of any great satisfaction, starting with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Fiorentina in his debut on 20 September 1931. At times he was deployed as an attacking midfielder or even as a centre-forward thanks to his keen eye for goal, netting 68 times in a total of 223 appearances.
