Udine, 4 February 2018. Udinese v AC Milan, matchday 23 of the 2017-2018 season. My father had been ill for a long time and the family was aware that he didn’t have long left, although hope never dies. He was bedridden and in a lot of pain, but we decided to watch that match together as a family. That Rossoneri side wasn’t exactly the most legendary nor was the game highly anticipated. But, out of the blue, something magical happened: Suso beat his marker and let fly a perfect shot into the top corner. I turned to my father and saw him smiling and immediately realised that this would be more than just a great goal. That was the last AC Milan goal I saw with him and, although I didn’t know it at the time, it would be the last time I saw him smile as he passed on later that day.
