OP‑ED: RED&BLACK BLOOD

As a young boy, as all my friends and schoolmates were developing their preference for one team or another, for a myriad of different reasons, I discovered that the only team that appealed to me was AC Milan. I will forever cherish the trip my brother and I took to see the European Cup final in Barcelona. Hour after hour on the bus, hope and excitement for what awaited us mixed with a tinge of fear of Steaua and their long unbeaten run. The referee’s whistle for kick-off was like a school bell announcing the start of class, a class on how football should be played. As the ball found the net the first time, the stadium exploded with a primal scream of pleasure, an incredible bliss that would carry on well after the match as we went out to celebrate on the Ramblas with our friends.
