Among the most pleasant surprises of AC Milan Women’s last few matches has been Giorgia Spinelli, a defender who is enjoying her first season in Rossonere colours. Born in the province of Bergamo in 1994, she is imposing physically and even has an eye for goal. At the beginning of her career, she played alongside Valentina Giacinti at Atalanta.
During the summer, AC Milan came calling, leading to her return to Italy after three seasons at French side Stade de Reims, who she captained to promotion to the Division 1 Féminine (the top flight in France) in 2019. Her first few months at the Rossonere could be described as a kind of apprenticeship as she made late substitute appearances against San Marino Academy, Juventus and Napoli. When the opportunity came, however, Giorgia made no mistake.
Spinelli made her first start for AC Milan against Roma on 15 November, with Vitale’s red card in the closing stages of the Rossonere’s match away to Napoli paving the way for her to do so. She did well against the Giallorosse, putting in a tidy, steady, physical and mistake-free performance. It was a display which provided her with a confidence boost, exactly what she needed. Giorgia was once again named in the starting eleven against Cesena in the Coppa Italia, a game which saw her score her first Rossonere goal with a right-footed strike from a corner.
After being rested for the team’s next Coppa Italia fixture against Orobica, she returned to the side against Fiorentina and scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute, sealing a vital win against an old rival. The impact she’s made and her readiness to play (and be decisive) are important signs which provide proof of the spirit within the group. Coach Ganz’s team are compact, clinical, focused and ready to give their all to fight to achieve their objectives.
