A very clear pattern has emerged in the last couple of seasons: five Derbies and five wins in all competitions. Currently, the Rossonere have a 21-point advantage over Inter in the Serie A Femminile. Are AC Milan the favourites to progress from the upcoming two-legged semi-final showdown in the Coppa Italia? On paper, yes. However, the task that awaits shouldn’t be underestimated. In the quarter-finals, Inter got the better of Fiorentina, a team that have won two of the last three editions of the competition (2016/17 and 2017/18) and made the final in 2018/19. Furthermore, the Viola were involved in the most recent Supercoppa Italiana final after eliminating AC Milan in the semis.
In short, it’d be wise not to make any bold predictions, especially as Inter have a chip on their shoulder after five consecutive defeats against their cross-city rivals, who also lost against Juventus last time out.
The Rossonere will need to be attentive, committed and, most of all, extremely motivated. A place in the final is at stake, and qualifying for it would represent an important milestone in the young history of AC Milan Women. The Rossonere are united by the desire to be successful, as Valentina Giacinti pointed out recently: “We really want to win a trophy, it’s a dream of ours. I’ve felt a close bond to this shirt ever since I wore it for the first time.”
Christy Grimshaw has also echoed this sentiment in recent days: “We want to win a trophy and qualify for the Women’s Champions League.” The path has been mapped out and there’s a lot of desire to bounce back. The Derby provides the opportunity to do so immediately.
