A child prodigy of Italian football in search of redemption after several turbulent years. This sums up well Pietro Pellegri, the new Rossoneri striker and second player to arrive at AC Milan from AS Monaco this summer.
A precocious talent in terms of physique and technique, Pellegri has repeatedly rewritten Italian football records during his time with Genoa. He was the youngest player to make his debut in Serie A – a record only broken in recent months – on par with Amedeo Amadei at 15 years and 280 days old. He also became the third-youngest scorer in the league, behind the aforementioned Amadei and Gianni Rivera, when he scored against Roma on 28 May 2017 to give Genoa the lead. And last but not least, he’s the youngest player ever to score multiple goals in a Serie A game since his brace against Lazio at only 16 years and 112 days old, beating a 86-year standing record previously held by Silvio Piola.
It was with this on his résumé that, in January 2018, he convinced Monaco to invest in him. His debut for the Monegasque side the following February made him their youngest debutant in over 40 years. His first goal in red and white came against Bordeaux at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, though injuries began to haunt Pietro and he was later side-lined for 18 months. He returned to the pitch last season, continuing where he left off, and finished with 16 appearances and one goal, having scored against his new Rossoneri teammate, Mike Maignan, when Monaco faced Lille.
The rediscovered normality of the last few months has also allowed for his debut with the National Team, in a friendly against Estonia on November 7th, 2020; his first call up arrived in September 2018, at the age of 17, but an injury had forced the Azzurri shirt to go to another. For the Rossoneri, Pietro will have the opportunity to, at last, put those difficult months behind him and resume the way he played at Genoa, placing his talent next to two experienced strikers by the names of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Olivier Giroud.
