The last match was a bitter one: down to ten players, the Rossonere conceded in the 89th minute and were thus defeated in the Supercup final against Juventus. However, AC Milan Women’s start to 2022 has undoubtedly been positive.
After a difficult December which saw them slip down the table following losses to Inter and Juventus, Ganz’s girls showed what they can do in the Final Four of the Italian Supercup. First, they beat Roma in the semi-finals – thus gaining revenge for their defeat in last season’s Coppa Italia final – before matching a strong Juventus side for 90 minutes. Important signs are there at the start of a big and action-packed year.
The second half of the 2021/22 season has now begun. The Rossonere will return to league action at the weekend, when they’ll face bottom-of-the-table Hellas Verona on matchday 12 in Serie A. Then, a double-header against Sampdoria awaits, first in the league (at Vismara) and then in the Coppa Italia (a first-leg quarter-final clash away from home). Should they go on to progress in the cup, they’ll face either Juventus or Inter in the semis.
The race for a Champions League spot is tight in the league, with four sides (Roma, Sassuolo, Inter and AC Milan) all within three points of each other. The team will have to face their fellow European challengers on the road, but, having picked up 15 points from six games, they do have a positive away record so far. There’s still all to play for, then, with the excellent additions of Alia Guagni and Martina Piemonte having also bolstered the ranks. The Rossonere know that nothing is beyond them if they play like they did in the Supercup.
