46 points in 22 games, 14 victories, 51 goals scored, 19 conceded and twelve clean sheets (the highest tally in the division) during the 2021/22 campaign. AC Milan Women's fourth-ever Serie A season has come to an end, with the aforementioned figures and a third-place finish to show for their hard work. In the end, they finished behind Juventus, who have just won their fifth consecutive Scudetto, and Roma, who picked up the last available UWCL place.
This season was also the final campaign with the "old" league format, as things will be very different in 2022/23: after a regular season with 10 teams, the league will be divided in two (the top five will fight it out to become the champions and the bottom five will aim to avoid the drop). This substantial change will make the competition gripping until the final day.
This is the third time in four seasons that AC Milan have finished in third place. Unfortunately, however, they weren't able to qualify for the Champions League for a second consecutive season due to Roma's impressive campaign. Despite encountering difficulties, the team have always been competitive and never given up.
There have been some disappointments: the Super Cup final was lost late on against Juventus, who also knocked the Rossonere out of the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Nevertheless, the team's form in 2022 has been very encouraging. Indeed, Ganz's side went on a ten-match unbeaten run in the league (W7, D3), a streak that started after defeat to Juve on 12 December and ended with a loss to the Bianconere on Saturday. With the season now over, our girls can rest for a while before beginning their preparations for 2022/23, when they’ll be hoping to win AC Milan Women’s first trophy.
