    HistoryApril 17th 2026

26 August 2007 was no normal day. That season, AC Milan returned to the Genoa’s ground after the events of January 1995, where Rossoblù fan Vincenzo Spagnolo tragically lost his life. With regard to the atmosphere ahead, it was a match both greatly feared and anticipated. Even without the presence of the travelling Rossoneri fans, those Genoa fans still felt affected and hurt by what had happened twelve years earlier.

Genoa v AC Milan was the first game of the 2007/08 season, the season that followed AC Milan’s historic seventh Champions League triumph. The heat was on, and not just because of the sunny weather. It was now the task of the Rossoneri, playing in their white kit, to remain in control of their emotions and stay focused on the pitch and the game at hand and nothing else.

It was a battle between Gasperini’s freshly promoted side and Ancelotti’s European champions. AC Milan were already 2-0 up at the end of the first half thanks to goals from Ambrosini and Kaká. Moving into the second half, Kaká bagged his second goal after he converted a penalty awarded to the away side by referee Saccani. Immediately after the match in Genoa, AC Milan were able get back on the road and make good progress towards their next away fixture in nearby Monte Carlo. Two important matches on the A10 motorway, going as far out as Ventimiglia. And then, still on the same stretch of road which was now the French A8, they reached the principality of Monaco.

At the Louis II Stadium, AC Milan took part in the European Supercup final against Sevilla after the tragic death of Antonio Puerta. Back on the pitch, after going behind to Renato’s goal for Sevilla, AC Milan came back with another three sumptous goals, this time coming from Inzaghi, Jankulovski and Kaká again. Two games, in Genoa and Monte Carlo, and two victories: A fine showing from the Rossoneri at the end of August 2007.
