14 November, halfway through Autumn. A key date in the careers of both Zlatan and Don Fabio. What do the prolific striker and the title-laden manager have in common on this date? Goals: one scored at Wembley and one scored in the Milan Derby. Their stories are intertwined to a much greater extent than just sharing this date however, the technical improvements the Swedish giant made under Capello after his arrival at Juventus highlight a deeper connection. But let’s return to 14 November, and in particular 14 November 1973, a crossroads moment in history. It was the day of both of Queen Anne’s wedding and the Italian National Team’s first every victory over England.
Not just a victory over England, but one won at the home of English football: Wembley. It was Fabio Capello who scored the late winning goal. He was yet to join AC Milan (he would do that two and a half years later), but two Rossoneri greats were playing in that game, Romeo Benetti and Gianni Rivera. Fast forward to 14 November thirty-seven years later, this time in 2010. Zlatan Ibrahimović was back playing in the Milan Derby, but this time he had traded a Nerazzurri shirt for that of the Rossoneri. Ibra scored the winning goal from the penalty spot just three minutes into the game, right in front of Inter’s fans. A goal that further cemented Milan’s spot at the top of the table as they went on to win the league that year.
