Gigi Lentini’s final brace before his awful accident came against Napoli at San Siro. After the record-breaking 58 games unbeaten, which ended with the home defeat against Parma, that super AC Milan team brought together in the summer of 1992 was starting to feel the strain from a number of injuries and a congested fixture list with many domestic and continental matches. Gigi Lentini had been a constant in the Milan team: he made 30 appearances and scored seven goals in the league and was a regular starter for the Rossoneri in their Champions League games, including the final against Bayern Munich. It had been a great year for the winger from Carmagnola and nobody could have predicted that the goals he would score against Napoli in April 1993 would be the last he would score for two years.
Napoli were 2-0 up at San Siro against a tired and weary Milan. The goals from Policano and Careca didn’t threaten the Rossoneri’s spot at the top of the table, but Milan’s last three games had seen them draw twice and lose once, so they desperately needed to turn things around in the game. It was Gigi himself who stepped up to take care of this during the second half, scoring two big goals to make it 2-2 at full-time. These were his final two goals in Serie A for two years until his return to the scoresheet in April 1995 as he opened the scoring away to Parma in Milan’s 3-2 win. That fateful car crash in August 1993 meant that Rossoneri fans were forced to wait for two years to see the winger get his name on the scoresheet once again.
