One incredible game, one even more impressive story. October had got off to a bad start for the Rossoneri, fresh off the back of a summer full of signings. Milan had just been beaten 4-0 at San Siro by Napoli, and it was up to Coach Mihajlović to turn things around with the players at his disposal.
The first signs of a turn in form came in the 1-1 draw with Torino, as the Rossoneri deserved more than a point after leading the game for long periods. But we had to keep pushing. The Saturday before AC Milan v Sassuolo in October 2015, Silvio Berlusconi was present at Milanello. He gave a talk to the group before the coaching staff met with the players for a meeting on their current form.
Then, after the draw with Torino, it was time for our number 99 to step to the fore: Gigio Donnarumma, our barely 17-year-old goalkeeper making his historic debut for the Rossoneri. Mihajlović had hinted at his first appearance in Genoa at the end of the month of September.
After a questionable second-half performance from Diego López, Donnarumma was sent out to warm up. He didn’t end up coming onto the pitch, but this was the first sign of change. Indeed, this change in the starting line-up arrived in Milan’s 2-1 home win over Sassuolo. The drama of that game all adds to Donnarumma’s tale: Consigli being sent off for the opposition, Bacca’s penalty, Berardi’s free kick equaliser and then Luiz Adriano’s winner to gift Milan a massive three points.
