At the start of the 1990's, so-called "snack triangles" were all the rage. Three teams and three 45-minute matches to decided the champion. No extra time, straight to penalties. Football on TV, a fateful summer match. It was a fashion that in reality only really caught on in Italy. While in Spain, the traditional format for pre-season tournaments remained the order of the day.
Or even a one-off 90-minute game, like the Gamper Trophy or the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy. There were also two-legged ties, like at the Villa de Madrid or in the Teresa Herrera Trophy in La Coruña. There was another option too, which AC Milan took. In the summer of 1993, the Rossoneri took part in the Torneo Ciudad de Oviedo.
The first game took place on 7 August, against the hosts Real Oviedo. It was a nervy, tight and tetchy affair. Massaro had a goal disallowed due to Papin's acrobatic challenge in the build-up and Oviedo went one up before half time. After the break, the Rossoneri ended up 3-0 down. A real affront to that AC Milan side, which normally chewed through teams. Unsurprisingly, the Rossoneri rallied and Marco Simone pulled two goals back.
But Simone's brace would only end up a consolation. Real Oviedo held on to win 3-2 and also allowed AC Milan, after a 3-0 win against Barcelona the day after, to win the tournament on goals scored. Barcelona 0-3 AC Milan: Brian Laudrup got the better of his brother Michael.
