#TBT: THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

A look back at AC Milan's win against Chievo on 7 October 2018

It’s not a game that went down in history, but, in hindsight, it’s interesting to note how things developed after AC Milan beat Chievo at San Siro two years ago. It was the final match before the October international break, with Gonzalo Higuaín bagging his first brace in the Rossoneri shirt. Both of the Argentine’s goals were created by Suso.

It seemed like the pair were destined to consolidate a lethal understanding, but this didn’t end up happening. Indeed, when looking back at AC Milan 3-1 Chievo on 7 October 2018, the words ‘what could have been’ spring to mind. After that double, Higuaín only scored two more goals, with these coming on home turf against Sampdoria and SPAL, the latter of which was his final AC Milan game. He even received a red card against Juventus at San Siro in between these fixtures.

As for Suso, the Spaniard produced some excellent performances in October and November 2018, but he then struggled to continue in the same vein in the following months. But that’s not all: the third AC Milan goal against Chievo that day was scored by Bonaventura.

After undergoing surgery almost two years before, it seemed like Jack was getting back to his best. However, a difficult, bleak and uncertain period was also about to begin for him. He actually took to the pitch against Inter after the international break but then had to be operated on, leaving him on the sidelines for a long time. So while it was a positive afternoon against Chievo, it was almost like the calm before a storm of unfortunate events.
