INTER v AC MILAN: TIME MACHINE

The derby is about to return, here are five memorable away wins in it

The derby is back, the most eagerly awaited match is back. At San Siro it will once again be Inter v AC Milan, exactly one year since the last derby played at the home of the Nerazzurri. As kick-off approaches, let's take a look back at its history by reviewing five Rossoneri victories from the past.

7 NOVEMBER 1993, THE PRELUDE TO A TRIUMPHANT SEASON
Inter and AC Milan came into the match in a strange situation of parity on several fronts: 14 points in the league and 13 Scudetti apiece. Capello's AC Milan, reigning champions of Italy, capitalised on the chances created and took the lead at the end of the first half with a shot from young Panucci. At the start of the second half Papin took advantage of indecision between Battistini and Zenga and doubled the lead. The Nerazzurri reduced the deficit in the final minutes thanks to a penalty by Bergkamp, but AC Milan still won, laying the foundations for the historic league-Champions League double at the end of the season.

23 OCTOBER 1999: WEAH AT THE LAST GASP
Lazio got off to a strong start, Inter were second in the table but the Rossoneri wanted to keep up the pace. The Derby was the 7th game and it was explosive. We won, in a comeback, with the winning goal in the 89th minute, in the perfect ending. Inter took the lead in the first half thanks to Ronaldo's penalty, but in the final minutes AC Milan came back, playing the first Derby with the Scudetto on their chests, won the previous season: Shevchenko equalised with a daring goal after hitting the crossbar, and Weah was higher than anyone else from Boban's corner in the 89th minute. Rossoneri delirium at San Siro!

5 OCTOBER 2003: THE FIRST GOAL FOR KAKÁ
A Derby that gave a first Rossoneri goal to Kaká. Ancelotti's Rossoneri came to San Siro as leaders, tied with Juventus and Roma. Two behind Inter. On the pitch at San Siro, however, there was only one team: AC Milan, reigning European champions, broke the deadlock in the first half with an 'Inzaghi-style' goal by Superpippo, a deflection off a Pirlo free kick. Then in the second half the Rossoneri went up a level: the Brazilian number 22 scored with a header from an assist from Gattuso, Shevchenko closed the game out with a right-footed shot under Toldo's legs. Martins' goal made the defeat a little lighter for the hosts. In May, AC Milan went on to celebrate their 17th Scudetto.

17 OCTOBER 2020: IBRA-SHOW
An almost five-year fast ended for the Rossoneri, who returned to winning a league derby after a 3-0 victory in January 2016. Pioli's AC Milan were now alone at the top of the table with 10 points, five ahead of their rivals. Ibra decided the match in the first half with a brace in the space of a few minutes: with a penalty in the 11th minute and an assist from Leão in the 16th. Lukaku reduced the deficit in the 32nd minute, but it was not enough for the Nerazzurri. The Swede found goals number five and six in the Rossoneri's shirt in the derby, AC Milan added another piece to their path of growth, and at the end of the season they would find themselves qualifying for the Champions League again.

5 FEBRUARY 2022: GIROUD TURNED IT ROUND
One of the turning points of our 19th Scudetto, a vital and breathtaking comeback, the start of a new journey and also of torment. From the Nerazzurri's potential breakaway to the reopened league season: Giroud balanced out Perišić's first-half goal with a brace in the 75th and 78th minutes and re-launched AC Milan, who were back to first in the table after 24 matches and believed. The memory of 12 months ago - exactly - is still fresh, especially the resilience of the Rossoneri after suffering in the first 45 minutes and the tenacity in staying in the game to turn it around in the final minutes.
