AC MILAN v SAMPDORIA: TIME MACHINE

Cutrone's opener, the Blucerchiati's comeback and the Rossoneri's final flourish: let's look back at that match

The next league fixture will see the Rossoneri face Sampdoria, in matchday 36 of the 2022/23 Serie A season. At  San Siro, against the Blucerchiati, we have seen some great matches: one of them was the 3-2 win on 28 October 2018, in matchday 10 of that season. A match that was a rollercoaster through the 90 minutes: let's relive it here.

SETTING THE SCENE
We came into this match sixth in the table after the derby defeat, level on points with Giampaolo's Sampdoria, the revelation of the season after nine matches. In the Rossoneri dugout was Gennaro Gattuso, who in this 18:00 Sunday meeting, set the team up in a 4-4-2: Donnarumma in goal, back line formed by Calabria, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodríguez; in midfield, from right to left Suso, Kessie, Biglia, Laxalt and an attacking pair of Higuaín and Cutrone.

FOUR GOALS IN ONE HALF
We took the lead thanks to Patrick Cutrone, perfectly placed at the back post after Suso's cross: a precise header and it was 1-0 to AC Milan after 17 minutes. Sampdoria, however, remained competitive and within 15 minutes they had turned the match on its head: in the 21st minute, Saponara was set up by Quagliarella to level things up. Ten minutes later, the roles were reversed, and it was Saponara who found the veteran striker, who struck a left-footed volley and put Sampdoria ahead. The two goals seemed to stir Milan, and Gonzalo Higuaín, who in the 36th minute after some nice interplay with Cutrone on the edge of the box, he beat Audero to level the score at half-time.

SUSO THE STAR OF THE SHOW
After a manic first half, the two sides took their feet off the accelerator a little and the second half began in calmer fashion. Higuain and Kessie each tested Audero, but the winner came from the left foot of Suso: found by Rodríguez's switch of play, the no. 8 found the far corner, with the Doriani keeper unable to do anything to deny AC Milan from taking a 3-2 lead. The comeback was complete and in the 86th minute it nearly became four as Laxalt hit the post. But the scoreline would remain 3-2: AC Milan won all three points, and rose to fourth place in the table.
