TIME MACHINE: MASSARO IN LAZIO v AC MILAN

Daniele Massaro has been associated with AC Milan since 1986, and the fact that he's now a Rossoneri brand ambassador proves just how special a player he was. He was part of an incredible era for the Club, scoring 70 goals in 306 appearances and contributing to some truly great victories. In 1993/94, his Rossoneri playing days were coming to an end, as was his career in general. He finished at Japanese side Shimizu S-Pulse after playing for Monza, Fiorentina, Roma (on loan) and, of course, AC Milan.

At the Diavolo, he was part of a side that dominated in Italy, Europe and on a global level, but 1993/94 was a particularly glorious season for the Club. The signs that this would be the case were there in February. In Lazio v AC Milan, for example, at a difficult ground to play at, Capello's side passed a tough test. The Rossoneri took to the pitch on the back of wins against Atalanta, Roma and Cremonese. In the opening 23 matchdays, they'd only lost once - away to Sampdoria. Other than that, the team had been in brilliant form, with Rossi keeping numerous clean sheets. A shutout was also recorded at the Olimpico, where a goal from Massaro proved decisive.

It was a tough encounter, and the Rossoneri needed to show real strength to come away with the victory. The Biancocelesti, whose coach was Dino Zoff at the time, had a dangerous attack consisting of Bokšić, Gascoigne and Signori. While the hosts had the better opportunities in the first half, it was the Rossoneri who took a lead into half-time thanks to a stoppage-time goal from that man with the nickname Provvidenza (Providence). Eranio slid in to connect with the ball, which then looped up off Negro and over Marchegiani before hitting the bar. It then rebounded back out to Daniele, our No.11, who was on hand to head into the net. 1-0, and that finish was enough for the victory. Another two points added to the tally in a season where AC Milan would go on to win their third consecutive Scudetto title thanks to a 50-point haul. And then there was room for the icing on the cake: the Champions League. AC Milan 4-0 Barcelona in Athens with a brace from… Daniele Massaro.
