TIME MACHINE: AC MILAN v CAGLIARI

A red carpet. 14 May 2011, the pitch at San Siro was the scene of the party for the Scudetto. AC Milan, during the prior weekend, drew 0-0 against Roma, mathematically securing the 18th Scudetto in the club's history, despite the challenges posed by Inter and Napoli. Cagliari were calm, safe and without expectation, making the match a mere formality. 

This was all about paying tribute to Allegri's side, a full stadium waiting for the final whistle to lift the trophy. Matchday 37 of the 2010/11 Serie A season began early for the Rossoneri faithful: in the afternoon, AC Milan fans flooded the heart of the city, literally filling Piazza Duomo to embrace the players, coaches and technical staff as they paraded on an open top bus; before heading into the evening to play the match, truly honoured with a serious team and display. The rout was set in motion by the end of the first half: Robinho's brace and a strike from Gattuso within the opening 30 paved the way before Cossu shortened the lead. 

In the second half, Abbiati was quick to deny Perico, Robinho wasted a chance and Seedorf, thanks to an assist from Pato, made it four. But the best news of the day was the return of Filippo Inzaghi who came back after five months out with an injury sustained to the cruciate ligament in his knee. 4-1, Ambrosini lifted the trophy and Boateng did the moonwalk. That league campaign finished in Udine, a win to consolidate top spot in the league with 82 points.
