TIME MACHINE: AC MILAN v FIORENTINA

Bacca and Boateng seal a convincing win at San Siro

The second international break of the season has just come to and end and it is time for the Rossoneri to focus on their next league fixture: Matchday 7 will be against Fiorentina at San Siro, and let's get ready for our face-off with La Viola by looking back at AC Milan v Fiorentina ten years ago. It was the 2015/16 season and mid-winter: on 17 January 2016, the teams headed to the pitch for the Sunday evening match at 20:45. It was a cold atmosphere at San Siro, in terms of the climate, and Siniša Mihajlović's Rossoneri's position in the table.

The Rossoneri started as a 4-4-2, with an attacking duo of Bacca and Niang ready to attack the space in behind. This happened just a few minutes into the game when Bacca surprised the Viola defence from Bonaventura's through ball: the Columbian burst down the right, and after a few feints, found the corner to make it 1-0 after just three minutes. The well set-up Rossoneri managed to withstand attacks from a Fiorentina side who came into the game just three points off first place. Paulo Sousa's side also had an armoury of talent including Iličić, Bernardeschi, Borja Valero, Marcos Alonso, Kalinić but also Giuseppe Rossi. However, AC Milan were also determined to make up positions in the table to get into a European spot. After the break Siniša sent on the two players returning to the Rossoneri: Mario Balotelli and Kevin-Prince Boateng, who both arrived in January.

The visitors kept pushing for an equaliser but they didn't create big issues for a very young Donnarumma. The main chance came to Luca Antonelli, who found himself in a shooting position very close to keeper Tătărușanu following a free kick, but he didn't manage to make it 2-0. And indeed it was Boateng, on his second appearance in his second spell with AC Milan, to find the second which sealed the game in injury time. It was an important win for Mihajlović's side, who launched themselves up to seventh place.
