Italy's run at the Women's World Cup ended at the quarter-finals. It was the first time that the Azzurre made it so far in 28 years, after previously getting there in 1991. In Valenciennes, Italy lost 2-0 to the Netherlands and were knocked out.
After beating China in the round of 16, the Azzurre faced the European champions in what was a balanced match that was settled by two set pieces late on. Miedema's header in the 70th minute and van Der Gragt's goal in the 80th minute proved to be enough for the Dutch to go through.

Like against China, three Rossonere players started the match, Giugliano and Giacinti started the match and played the full 90 while Bergamaschi went off in the 75th minute, replaced by Serturini. Sabatino also came on for 35 minutes, replacing Bonansea in the 54th minute.
Laxalt's adventure at the Copa America also ended at the quarter-final stage. Uruguay went out to Peru on penalties. After suffering a muscle injury in the previous days, Diego didn't feature.
