The September window for the European qualifiers for Qatar 2022 came to an end last night. The last day of the window saw two important players in action from Stefano Pioli's AC Milan: Davide Calabria and Alexis Saelemaekers.
The Rossoneri number 2 played the entire second half of Italy's 5-0 win over Lithuania, making his third appearance for the Azzurri in doing so. An important experience for Davide, who returns to the national team after his first appearances in November 2020. Thanks to the win in Reggio Emilia, Italy have extended to their lead over Switzerland in second place of Group C to +6 (having played two games more). Next up for Mancini's team is the Nations League Semi-final against Spain on 6 October at San Siro.
Alexis, meanwhile, left an important mark in Belgium's success over Belarus: It was him who provided the assist for the winning goal scored by Dennis Praet. The win allows the Red Devils to open a nine-point gap over the two runners-up in Group E, Wales and Czech Republic. Saelemaekers thus capped off a successful week with the national team, whose next appointment will also be in the Nations League, against France on 7 October at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, in a possible Rossoneri Derby against Mike Maignan and Theo Hernández.
