KESSIE DECIDES IVORY COAST V MALAWI

A penalty by the Rossoneri midfielder seals the three points as Les Éléphants take top spot in the race to Qatar 2022

Franck Kessie's Ivory Coast produced a good result as they defeated Malawi 2-1 in the fourth match in Group D of the African Qualifiers for Qatar 2022.

In the match at the Stade de l'Amitié, the hosts immediately got off to a strong start and in the 2nd minute, they opened the scoring with Pepe, who was able to pounce on a defensive error and make it 1-0. The visitor’s reaction was immediate, and they scored an equaliser in the 20th minute with Muyaba's left-footed shot from distance, making it 1-1. The goal to decide the contest, however, was a penalty converted midway through the second half by Franck Kessie, who with one shot made it 2-1 and sealed all three points.

The standings currently see Ivory Coast lead the group on 10 points, one more than Cameroon, in what promises to be a head-to-head battle for first up until the final day. Next up for Frank and his teammates will be Ivory Coast v Mozambique.
