THEO'S ASSIST HELPS FRANCE TO ROUND OF 16

Hernández and Giroud star again in the Bleus' 2-1 win over Denmark

France win their second game in Group D and qualify to the Round of 16 with a game to spare at the World Cup in Qatar. For Denmark though, they find themselves in a sticky situation with only one point on the board and a final must-win game against Australia to have any hope of going through to the next round.

The French took the lead at the Stadium 974 after Hernández and Mbappé combined perfectly, with the PSG forward opening the scoring after 61 minutes. The Danes' equaliser came seven minutes later through Christensen's header, but it didn't harm Deschamps' side, who found the winner four minutes from the end of normal time through none other than Mbappé again to make it 2-1.

Out of the Rossoneri present, it was Theo Hernández's performance that shone brightest who, after making an assist for the first goal, has become the first defender to have delivered an assist in two consecutive World Cup games for France since 1966. It's these types of numbers that support the idea the AC Milan wideman is also able to provide not only for Club but also for country. Theo created the most chances than any other player on the night (five), and had the most touches of the ball for France during the game (87). Instead, Olivier Giroud didn't find the net this time around, but nonetheless gave his contribution to the team, especially in the aerial battle, before being replaced by Thuram around the hour mark. Oli also broke another record, becoming one of only three players for France to have won more than ten games in the World Cup (eleven, along with Hugo Lloris and Antoine Griezmann).

Simon Kjær didn't feature in the Danish side with the Rossoneri central defender not finding a place in Hjulmand's 3-4-2-1 formation.
