The United States won their do-or-die showdown with Iran to progress to the round of 16. At the Al-Thumama Stadium in Doha, it finished 1-0 to Dest and co. on matchday three in Group B. The Rossoneri full-back played a key role, providing the assist for the winning goal: in the 38th minute, Sergiño met McKennie’s ball over the top and, with his head, found Pulisic, who was left with an easy tap-in. Sergiño thus became the youngest defender to register an assist at this World Cup.
In addition to setting up his teammate to score, the 22-year-old produced an excellent performance: before being replaced in the 82nd minute by Zimmerman, he made a significant contribution in defence and in possession, constantly working his way up and down the right flank. Only Adams (84) had more touches than Sergiño Dest (74) out of all the US players in the match against Iran. The Americans will face van Gaal’s Netherlands, who finished top of Group A, in the round of 16 at 16:00 CET on Saturday 3 December.
Earlier on in the day, Fodé Ballo-Touré didn’t take to the pitch for Senegal, who qualified for the last 16 with a 2-1 victory over Ecuador. The Lions of Teranga will come up against England at 20:00 CET on Sunday 4 December.
