AC MILAN, HIS LIFE'S PURPOSE

Franco Baresi was always known for his reserved nature, speaking only when he had something meaningful to say. Among his most memorable and important reflections on football and life came on his retirement, his devotion to the shirt and the values of sport. On the night of "Sei per sempre" in October 1997, his final great appearance at San Siro, he said: "I'm as emotional as I was on the day of my debut. I still can't believe I won't be chasing a football anymore..." Throughout his career, the Captain and Rossonero of the Century also spoke often about loyalty and what Milan means to him: "I've always felt this shirt was like a second skin. Defending it was the most natural honour for me." 

When discussing the importance of the team and his teammates, he commented: "The captain has to lead by example, but it's your teammates who make you great, both on and off the pitch." Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport in 2025, Baresi reflected on his lifelong bond with the Club: "Milanello felt like paradise to me. The Club gave my life meaning. The feeling that stays with me after everything? Immense gratitude." More recently, Baresi described carrying the Olympic torch at San Siro for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games as the greatest emotion of his sporting life, admitting that his legs were shaking: "Opening the Olympic Games was the most emotional moment of my sporting life. I'd never felt anything like it. You're holding that torch in your hands, and you know it carries the history of sport, and in some ways, the history of human civilisation too. It's a vastly powerful symbol. It was surreal. I didn't even know Bergomi would be there; I only found out afterwards."

A LEGEND AMONG LEGENDS
Franco Baresi was regarded by football greats such as Diego Armando Maradona, Enzo Bearzot, and many of his former teammates as the greatest defender in football history, admired for his class, elegance, and incredible ability to read the game. In his autobiography, Maradona looked back at a famous one-on-one in which Baresi dispossessed him with extraordinary elegance, without committing a foul or making contact. He described him as the ultimate defender and the best he had ever faced. The Argentine legend's admiration for the Rossoneri captain ran so deep that he asked Baresi for his shirt and proudly wore it. Bearzot, the coach who led Italy to World Cup glory in 1982, said: "Since becoming a coach, there has only been one player I committed myself to after seeing him just once: Franco Baresi. This young man is blessed by God himself." Jamie Carragher praised Baresi's athleticism and reactions, describing him as a defender who was not physically imposing but incredibly agile and dominant.

Many of his former AC Milan teammates recalled that a single glance from him on the pitch was enough to lead the entire team, embodying quiet leadership and natural authority. Arrigo Sacchi summed it up by saying: "Thank you for everything you did, from someone who had the privilege of coaching you and will always be grateful." Former teammates and opponents alike, including Martin Keown, also praised his remarkable physical and mental strength, remembering his remarkable recovery in just 25 days from knee surgery to produce a flawless performance in the 1994 World Cup Final. Regularly a feature in all-time World Dream Teams by international publications such as France Football, Baresi is still widely regarded as one of the finest players never to have won the Ballon d'Or, having been a runner-up in 1989 behind his Rossoneri teammate Marco Van Basten. Following his passing, Adriano Galliani wrote: "You have reached your President." Paolo Maldini added: "Whenever we played without you, we always asked ourselves: How are we supposed to do this without our Captain?"
