Ahead of the derby, a look at the numbers. It will be a derby that could say a lot about AC Milan and Inter’s seasons even if it’s only the fourth match of the Serie A campaign. Ahead of kick-off in the big match at San Siro on Saturday 21 September at 20:45 CEST, we’ve highlighted twelve bits of trivia with a particular focus on the Rossoneri’s form.
PREVIOUS HOME MEETINGS FOR THE ROSSONERI
1- AC Milan and Inter have played each other 85 times in Serie A with the Rossoneri as the home side. There have been 31 Inter wins, 29 for AC Milan and 25 draws.
GENERAL STATISTICS
2- Recent derbies have been very hard-fought with nine of the last ten goals coming in the second half of matches. The only exception was Vecino’s in the third minute last season.
3- In the history of Serie A, AC Milan and Inter have only met six times on matchday four. Inter have never lost this early having played out two 1-1 draws and four wins. There have been three prior league meetings in September, with a win apiece and one draw.
4- AC Milan have won the last four home matches in the league, conceding only one goal. The Rossoneri haven’t won five consecutive matches at home since August 2014. In their last eight Serie A games, AC Milan have won six and lost two. The team haven’t gone nine games without a draw since October 2017.
5- The Rossoneri’s defence has been in excellent form this season. In 2019, no side has kept more than AC Milan’s ten clean sheets, with Inter having kept the opposition out on nine occasions.
6- AC Milan have an average possession of 64.1% this season, only Bologna (66.6%) have seen more of the ball.
PLAYER FOCUS
7- Suso has scored three Serie A goals against Inter, more than against any other side in Italy's top division. His only brace at San Siro was against the Nerazzurri in November 2016. The Spaniard has also been prodigious in terms of creating chances: only Erick Pulgar (13) has set up more opportunities for his teammates than Suso (12) after three Serie A matches.
8- Romagnoli and Musacchio are the two players who have made the most passes between one another this Serie A season with 140. Behind them is the pair of Sensi and Brozovic (112). Finally, four of the top five players in Serie A for passes completed are AC Milan or Inter players. They are: Brozovic (268), Musacchio (255), Romagnoli (254) and Skriniar (240).
9- With his goal against Verona, Piątek has hit 23 goals in 40 Serie A matches. The last player to do as well in as many games was Carlos Tevez in 2014 (25 goals).
10- Kessié’s next appearance will be his 100th in all competitions for the Rossoneri.
COACH FOCUS
11- Marco Giampaolo and Antonio Conte have never met in Serie A or Serie B. The Coach from Puglia won all four of his derbies when he was the Juventus Coach, while the Coach born in Switzerland won four derbies and drew two against Genoa when he was in charge of Sampdoria.
12- The last coach to win his first Milan Derby with AC Milan was Clarence Seedorf. 1-0 was the result in May 2014 thanks to a de Jong goal.
