A win was required and Maurizio Ganz's Rossonere got it by beating Zurich 3-2 in their final appearance at the WomensCup to secure third. The result doesn’t fully reflect the performance after AC Milan were excellent to go three goals up before dropping off and conceding two before the final whistle. After suffering a heavy defeat to PSG, it was an excellent response from the side and the tournament gave the girls the chance to test themselves against quality European sides. Ganz was also able to give playing time to almost all of his players.
MATCH REPORT
Milan started strongly and went ahead after just eight minutes thanks to Valentina Giacinti. From a Zigic assist, the captain controlled the ball before beating Kaspar with a right-foot strike. Twelve minutes in, Nora Heroum doubled the lead from close range after redirecting the ball in. After that lighting start, Milan slowed down a bit and Korenciova made a good save 33 minutes in to stop Zurich from finding a way back into the match. In the second half, the Rossoneri remained in control and Valentina Bergamaschi made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute. She did well to win the ball in midfielder before going through alone on goal and finishing with her left under pressure. After a number of changes for both sides, Zurich almost brought it back but Andrade and Humm goals in the 86th and 90th minutes weren’t enough for the Swiss side.
