AC Milan made no mistake as they beat Sassuolo 1-0 thanks to Sandra Zigic’s goal. A key victory to boost their ambitions and up the pressure on Juventus, with the Bianconeri in action on Sunday away to Roma. It was a top performance at Vismara, but the Rossonere only made their way past a tenacious Sassuolo defence in the second half, substitute Sandra Zigic backheeling home to send the points Milan’s way. With this result the Rossonere climb to 17 points in the standings, beginning preparations for their next game which sees them away in a tough fixture with Florentia.
MATCH REPORT
Compared to during their draw with Juventus last time out, Coach had Carissimi in the starting line-up from minute one as she took Lady Andrade’s place in team. Heroum was pushed forward into the attack alongside Bergamaschi and Giacinti. It was a very tactical start to the game from both teams as the two sides studied each other without taking a shot in the opening minutes. The first chance for the Rossonere came in the 17th minute when Jane played Bergamaschi through one on one with Lemey, but the Rossonere forward couldn’t put her side ahead. Another opportunity arose for Milan in the 33rd minute as Bergamaschi latched onto Tucceri Cimini’s cross from the left and her effort came back off the post. Linda then decided to take the game into her own hands ten minutes later as she slalomed through the Sassuolo defence and thumped the ball against the crossbar from the edge of the area. A cautious Sassuolo side did however offer something going forward as Kamila Dubcova’s right-footed effort flew wide by a hair’s breadth. But Ganz’s girls survived that scare and took the lead in the 60th minute: Bergamaschi found herself free on the right, she cut it back to Zigic who duly put Milan 1-0 up with her heel. The goal forced Sassuolo to come out and look for the equaliser which led to plenty of chances for the Rossonere after play restarted, but neither Giacinti nor Salvatori were able to add to the scoreline. The result ultimately remained the same: three hard-won points for the Rossonere.
