The Rossonere picked up another win at the Vismara on Sunday to finish the year in the best possible fashion, beating rivals Sassuolo to keep the pressure on league leaders Juventus. Goals from Giacinti and Spinelli made the difference, with the latter celebrating her third goal of the campaign after her birthday on Saturday. This victory now leaves AC Milan on 27 points from the 30 on offer, in what has been a blistering start. The win was played out in front of Rossoneri CEO Ivan Gazidis, with the team doing well to fend off Sassuolo’s attacking ambition early on. Coach Ganz’s side remained resilient and could be thankful for a succession of decisive saves from Korenčiova. It was then Valentina Giacinti who stepped up to break the deadlock, scoring the opener when the game was finely balanced. It was then Spinelli who sealed the win with a superb header in the 75th minute. After previous victories over Roma and Fiorentina, this is now Milan’s third consecutive big match triumph, keeping a well-earned clean sheet and moving five points ahead of the Neroverdi. 2021 now awaits with exciting objectives on the horizon!
MATCH REPORT
Sassuolo, who sit third in the league table, started the match strongly on Sunday and a header from Miashi forced an early save from Korenčiova. However, the Rossonere responded well and it was then Dowie who struck the crossbar from close-range in the 22nd minute. Milan had another great chance in the 34th minute, with Bergamaschi picking out Tucceri Cimini on the left before her shot just slid wide of the post. The start of the second half saw Korenčiova called into action once again, as she palmed away a left-footed effort from Dubcova. In a game of super saves at either end, it was then Lemey’s turn to keep out the opposition, as she did well to stop a diving header from Dowie. However, it was then just a few minutes later that Milan took the lead, with Spinelli picking out Giactinti in space in the 56th minute who finished well past Lemey. Almost instantly after Grimshaw had a chance to score a second but her right-footed effort was palmed away. Sassuolo themselves had a good chance to score, but the post was on hand to keep out Miashi’s free-kick. It was then in the 76th minute that Spinelli scored the Rossonere’s decisive second, heading home to secure an impressive 2-0 win.
