The first leg of the Coppa Italia quarter-final between Sassuolo and AC Milan finished 1-1 on Sunday, setting up an intriguing return fixture at the Vismara in two-weeks times. All in all, it was a fair result after Milan enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but Sassuolo had better chances while testing the impressive Korenčiová. It was Valentina Giacinti who initially gave Milan the lead just before half-time with her 14th goal of the season, only for Davina Philtjens to equalise at the death. It was this late goal that prevented Coach Ganz’s side from transferring their winning streak from league to cup. However, attention now turns to next Sunday, when Milan will host at the Vismara at 12:30 CET.

There were several changes following our recent win against Fiorentina, with Fusetti, Čonč and Rizza all coming in. As for the action itself, it took just a few seconds for Milan to enjoy their first chance, with a header from Bergamaschi cleared off the line. It was then Korenčiová’s turn to save the Rossonerw in the 7th and 37th minute respectively, making two great interceptions to keep Sassuolo at bay. The first goal was scored in the 44th minute, as Valentina Giacinti made no mistake in beating Lemey one on one to boost her Coppa Italia tally to four.
There was little excitement throughout the second half, largely due to the poor playing conditions. Milan missed a chance to seal the win in the 72nd minute, with Grimshaw failing to score the Rossonere’s second after good build-up play from Bergamaschi and Giacinti. Sassuolo then responded in the 76th minute as Tomaselli threatened Korenčiová before Philtjens spurned a chance six minutes later. It was then the Belgian who dashed Milan’s hopes in added time, as she beat the Rossonere’s No.12 with a precise left-footed strike.
