The season that will be tinted in European colours began with a draw for AC Milan Women, in a friendly match in Šiauliai against the champions of Lithuania. The first match of the season for Maurizio Ganz's girls against Gintra finished 1-1 against a team that will, like the Rossonere, be involved in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Women's Champions League in a month’s time. The well-earned draw was sealed after a goal near the end of the match by Miriam Longo, against a team that are ahead in their preparations compared to AC Milan and are already on their third friendly match of the season.
There were plenty of debuts handed out to the Rossonere: Thrige, Stapelfeldt and Thomas all played from the first minute, while Giuliani, Kirschstein and Miotto came on to make their debuts in the second half. The match saw AC Milan produce a good performance in the first half in which they should have scored on several occasions. Ganz's girls were even more involved in the second half of the match against their opponents who employed a defend and counter-attack style, but in the 74th minute, it was the hosts who took the lead with Carter's goal. AC Milan weren’t to be discouraged and found the equalising goal in the 86th minute. A Rizza cross from the right was met by Giacinti who struck at goal: The captain's effort was saved, however, with the ball ending up at the feet of Miriam Longo who made sure to slot it home. In the final few minutes, the Rossonere came close to making it 2-1, but the match finished in a draw.
Now there will be another week of work at Vismara for Ganz's girls: The next friendly engagement will be on Saturday in Saint Vincent where there will be two matches, against the Swiss team Servette, another team involved in the Champions League preliminaries, and Sampdoria, new entrants of the new Women's Serie A.
