After an impressive victory against Tokyo, the Rossonere's Women's Cup 2022 journey came to an end. In front of a lively crowd at the Lynn Family Stadium, Racing took the lead in the first half an hour, with Nadim and Wang putting their names on the scoresheet. AC Milan really progressed as the game went on, after a first half in which the experience of the American’s prevailed. The second half was a more even contest as AC Milan played with courage but didn’t manage to find a goal to reignite the tie.
This was a great test ahead of the start of the season, especially considering the difference in pace and physicality in comparison with the Americans who are currently in the running for the title in their own league – having played 12 games already. Now comes the third place play-off to end the tournament on a high, with the Rossonere in action this Saturday at 22:00 CEST against Club America, who lost their semifinal match against OL Women (final score 2-1).
MATCH REPORT
The hosts started strongly and took the lead through a corner in the 13th minute: Damelo’s cross was met by a header from Nadim at the front post. The Rossonere gave little to no response and fell 2 goals behind soon after in the 24th minute: McDonald burst down the right wing and crossed the ball into the middle where Árnadóttir's rebound ended up at the feet of Wang who hit it first time to put one past Giuliani. The first chance for the Rossonere came in the 39th minute which saw Kamila Dubcová’s right-footed shot blocked by Lund. The first half ended with the American’s on top: a side more threatening and dominant in possession.
The interval came as a wake-up call for Ganz’s team who fought their way back into the game as Asllani saw her header once again stopped by Lund after the Swede played a one-two pass with Thomas. AC Milan were a lot tighter at the back conceded few chances in the second half as their change in formation slowed down the pace of the game. In the closing stages the Rossonere produced another couple of chances: firstly some excellent defending from Racing denied Piemonte in the 81st minute, then a miraculous save from Lund kept out the right-footed shot of Thomas. After 4 minutes of added time the final whistle was blown and the semifinal ended 2-0 to Racing Louisville.
