Six days on from the first leg at PUMA House of Football, ending 1-0 in favour of the Rossonere courtesy of Piemonte's header, the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg is set to take place in the capital between Roma and AC Milan. This time round, the stage is Tre Fontane and at stake is a place in the Final, and a chance to fight for what is undoubtedly a valuable honour. On the eve the fixture, which kicks off at 14:30 CET on Saturday 11 March, here is our Match Preview.
LATEST FROM PUMA HOUSE OF FOOTBALL
It took a spirited and courageous display to bring home the first leg, and now Maurizio Ganz's side will be looking to hold off Roma and secure their berth in the Final. They head into the game in great form, and with the first-leg success, broke Roma's run of eight straight victories in all competitions - last being defeated in December 2022 - and earning their eighth win in ten games, in an electrifying start to 2023. There's also good news from the treatment room with Coach Ganz expecting Marta Mascarello, Guðný Árnadóttir and Lindsey Thomas to return - all missing from the reverse fixture at PUMA House of Football - but he will be without Kosovare Asllani.
"It will be an important and great match to play" - Coach Ganz's fore-comments. "We're going to play the second leg of an exciting, match up. Roma, despite last week's defeat, are still favourites, but we will take the field as always to give our best and aim for the final".
Here is the Rossonere squad: Babb, Fedele, Giuliani; Árnadóttir, Carage, Fusetti, Guagni, Mesjasz, Nouwen, Soffia, Thrige; Adami, Dubcová K, Grimshaw, Mascarello, Vigilucci; Bergamaschi, Dubcová M., Piemonte, Thomas.
LATEST FROM ROMA
The slender defeat to the Rossonere has only partially tarnished an almost perfect 2023 for Alessandro Spugna's side. Roma go into the game boasting some incredible numbers and stats registered from their fixtures so far this season. Besides the Coppa Italia, the Giallorosse are still involved in every competition - as well as leading the Championship Round - and will soon be tasked with facing Barcelona in the Champions League. Having failed to net for the first time in 28 games, Roma will be looking at their forwards, above all at former Rossonere Giacinti, to pull them back into the tie. Just as in the first game, Roman Haug is expected to be Coach Spugna's only absence.
PRE-MATCH
On the three previous occasions AC Milan have won their first legs in the knockout stages of a competition - in the 2018/19, 2021/22 and 2022/23 Coppa Italia quarter-finals - they have always gone through. The Rossonere have won their last eight away games, in all competitions, and have only had a longer-winning streak on the road once since they were formed in 2018 (ten on that occasion, between December 2019 and December 2020). Turning attentions to individual players, Selena Babb has made 14 saves from this season's Coppa Italia quarter-finals onward - five of these came in the first leg against Roma - with only Bettineschi registering more in the same time period (17). Furthermore, the three outfield players to have recovered the most number of balls in this edition are all Rossonere: Christy Grimshaw (25), Kamila Dubcová (24) and Martina Piemonte (23).
