A big win with an important outcome: AC Milan defeated Brescia to take top spot in the Primavera 2 Championship for the first time this season. The decisive 3-1 victory, courtesy of goals from Mionić, Pecorino and Sala, was made even more meaningful after the former league leaders Hellas Verona lost 2-1 away to Udinese. This was a tough fixture for the young Rossoneri who found it difficult to control the flow of the game. Their opponents fought hard and made life difficult but Coach Giunti’s side, who were without Brescianini and Maldini, never lost their clarity of mind. It was refereeing decisions that decided this contest in the favour of Milan as they were awarded two penalties and saw Capoferri sent off during the second half. The decisive goals came late on in the match as Milan made it five wins out of five. At the close of matchday nine, the Rossoneri are sitting alone at the top of the league on 23 points, two points ahead of second place.
THE REPORT
Heavy rain and a sodden pitch created a tough game for both sides. After a quiet opening it was Sala who had the first chance in the 15th minute as his first-time shot went wide. He was then brought down in the box in the 28th minute; the referee awarded a penalty and Mionić put the ball past the goalkeeper to give the Rossoneri the lead. The hosts reacted immediately and threatened for the first time during the match, especially in a 31st minute goalmouth scramble. Tonin could have doubled Milan’s lead early on in the second half but instead it was Brescia who opened the scoring in the second 45 minutes as Torchio gathered a rebound off the crossbar and sent a deflected effort past Soncin in the 54th minute. Abbrandini then pulled off a great save to deny Frigerio. Milan went a man up in the 62nd minute as Capoferri was sent off for a second bookable offence. Pecorino then wasted a great opportunity in the 66th minute as he shot over. But he then won a decisive penalty in the 84th minute as Abbrandini brought him down. He picked himself up, dusted himself down and put it past the goalkeeper to hand his side the victory. He then set up Sala for a tap-in in the third minute of stoppage time.
