The Rossoneri take a two-goal lead before conceding the comeback to the visitors. The wonderkid's goal gives us the win
It had to be a win and it was. But it was not an easy one at San Siro. Despite Rijeka's combative approach, the Rossoneri were in control of the game for 80' then suddenly something went wrong. It could have been costly, very, but the Red and Blacks managed to find the goal for 3-2 at the last gasp. Three precious points for Montella's boys who lead group D with 6 points, two above AEK Athens. Overall, it was a deserved win, with the goals from André Silva and Musacchio in the first minutes of the two halves, respectively, before the visitors' comeback. And in the end, it was Patrick Cutrone to come to the rescue with his fifth goal of the season. The young no. 63 continues to prove his value and can celebrate another decisive goal. Now it's time to focus on Roma, Sunday at 6 pm at San Siro: a match that can tell us a lot on the team's ambitions for this season.
THE MATCH REPORT
Supported by more than four thousand fans at San Siro, Rijeka press AC Milan high and go close in the 3’: Pavivicic beats the Rossoneri’s off-side trap and serves Heber whose effort ends wide. The visitors seem more in control, as opposed to Montella’s team who look tense, but in the 14’ a great ball by Fabio Borini releases the run of André Silva down the left flank; the Portuguese striker dribbles past his opponent before curling the ball past Sluga. In the 24’, coach Kek's men have the chance to equalise with another poor offside trap from Milan’s defence, but Pulijc heads the ball straight at Donnarumma. The Red and Blacks are struggling to find the right rhythm with the Croatians who keep a combative approach.
As the second half begins, AC Milan find the goal for 2-0 through Mateo Musacchio who taps the ball in from close range. As Montella’s men seem in control of the game, the visitors find the net to reopen the match: Donnarumma comes off his line to make the challenge with Acosty with the ball that falls into the net after a rebound. In the 87’ Rijeka are awarded a penalty and level the score through Elez. It's 2-2 at the 90'. But as all hopes were lost the ball falls to wonderkid Patrick Cutrone who finds a last-gasp goal lifting it past the keeper and into the net. Whew!
