A new arrow in Vincenzo Montella's quiver: the young Turkish talent joins AC Milan through to 2021
The Rossoneri continue this summer of signings with the sixth new player to join the club. After Mateo Musacchio, Franck Kessie, Ricardo Rodriguez, André Silva and Fabio Borini, the duo Fassone-Mirabelli hand over to Vincenzo Montella's squad Hakan Calhanoglu. Here is the official statement:
AC Milan announce the signing of Hakan Calhanoglu from Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The player has penned a four-year contract through to 2021.
Name: Hakan. Surname: Calhanoglu. This is not an average player. His technique, his shooting skills and tactical knowledge make him one of the most interesting talents in Europe. The class of 1994 former Bayer Leverkusen player - born in Mannheim, Germany, but of Turkish origin - is a modern No 10, who can play in the hole, down both flanks or as shadow striker. Hakan is a dynamic player, capable of picking up the tempo playing vertically. He surely is not the player that goes looking for the easy pass which makes him unpredictable and most importantly decisive (since 2013/14, only Max Kruse - with 282 in 121 appearances - has created more chances for his teammates than Calhanoglu, in Bundesliga - 253, in 111 matches -). But not only this, as the young Turkish talent is a great free-kick taker who looks up to Juninho Pernambucano and David Beckham... the results are on his side. He manages to give the ball unpredictable trajectories to surprise the opponents' goalkeeper. A real talent, who has arrived at AC Milan looking to become an ace.
Hakan started his youth career in Karlsruhe's academy, making his senior team debut in 2011. Over the first two seasons, he made 55 appearances scoring 11 goals, attracting the attention of several big clubs. In the end, Hamburg HSV won out and signed the young Turkish talent, who in the 2013-2014 season confirmed his club had made a great deal ending the spell with 38 appearances and 11 goals. Especially with his piece of magic from 41 metres on 22 February 2014 which gave Hamburg the win in the match against Borussia Dortmund. Not only goals, though, as Hakan has shown great vision and great skill with the ball. All this does not go unnoticed and Roger Schmidt (manager of Bayer Leverkusen) decides to hand him over the keys of Bayer's midfield. In two and a half seasons (he hasn't played the last four months because of a preliminary agreement he had signed and called off with Trabzonspor, in 2011) he recorded 87 appearances with 20 goals between the Bundes Liga and the DFB-Pokal [German Cup, ed.]. Calhanoglu has also been noticed by the coach of Turkey and was called up with his national team to take part in the 2016 European Championships in France.
