The 1956/57 season began with various changes, starting from the bench, where Gipo Viani replaced Héctor Puricelli. Numerous signings were made for the new coach, including Zannier, Galli, Soldan, Bredesen and Cucchiaroni, whilst Gastone Bean was promoted from the Primavera. On the other hand, Nordahl's departure stands out, as Liedholm was elected captain. The Rossoneri got off on the right foot in the league with three victories in as many matches, before two losses to Napoli and Padova which seemed to slow them down. With the draw from behind in the Derby (1-1) and the successive away win at champions Fiorentina (0-3), they changed course. The Rossoneri shifted up a gear and collected victory after victory, Winter Champions, four and five points ahead of the Viola and Nerazzurri respectively. The important absences of Bean, who had been the breakout star of the campaign so far with 17 goals, and Cucchiaroni did not halt AC Milan's progress, as they demonstrated the leadership and quality of a squad with the utmost depth. The Rossoneri broke away with the home victory over Fiorentina (2-0), as the rest of the championship proved to be a Milanista domination. They were declared Champions of Italy with three matches to go; it was the sixth title in AC Milan's history. The season came to a close in June '57, in what would be the last edition of the Coppa Latina, in which the Rossoneri finished in third place.
