There were plenty of changes during the summer of 1967, starting at the top: Franco Carraro succeeded his father, Luigi, as Club President. Meanwhile, Nereo Rocco returned to the Rossoneri dugout and was placed in charge of a lineup that was boosted by the signings of experienced players like Malatrasi, Hamrin, Cudicini and Pierino Prati. The latter joined after the season had begun but made a decisive contribution with 15 goals. It ended up being a highly successful season, with AC Milan finishing ahead of Napoli to win their ninth Scudetto. The title was never in doubt: AC Milan won the league by nine points after picking up 21 points in the first half of the campaign and 25 in the second.
The Rossoneri's success wasn't limited to domestic football; Rocco also led AC Milan to their first-ever European Cup Winners' Cup triumph. The team got the better of Levski Sofia, Győri ETO, Standard Liège and Bayern Munich to reach the final in Rotterdam, where they beat Hamburg 2–0 thanks to two goals from Hamrin.
